Swimrun, not for wimps.

Running and swimming, alternating, from island to island, over a great distance. Can you do that?

Have you never seen a Swimrun event? That is very well possible, because in the Netherlands there are not many places to do that. Compared to abroad, we have little nature to move around freely.

In 2018 we held the first edition in our Lauwersmeer area, which appeared to be extremely suitable for this fast-growing sport. This sport started in Sweden, where a group of athletes placed a bet to race across 21 islands as quickly as possible. It was a long and difficult journey, but in the end a great experience (ÖtillÖ).

And we were able to have that experience last year during the Beleef Lauwersoog Swimrun, together with around 120 participants. We think it was a success last year, and that’s why we want to do it again this year.

What was particularly appreciated by the participants is the simplicity and small-scale nature of the event. We are trying to achieve this again this year. Don’t expect a big music festival and a large audience. We go for ‘close to nature’. The number of participants will therefore also remain limited. A maximum of 200 people may participate.

Do you want to know what it looks like during our swim run? Have look at all our photos. We think they speak for themselves.

To participate in a Swimrun you do not need expensive equipment or a daily training schedule, but a lot of endurance. Workouts can easily be integrated into daily life and everyone can set aside time during the week for an early swimming session or a jog during the lunch break. Even if you only train during the weekend, this is enough to prepare you for a race.

Swimrun equipment does not have to be special – existing running shoes and swimming equipment can easily be used for this. And for those who want to upgrade, many specialized Swimrun equipment is now available. But to try it out for the first time, you don’t have to make any major investments!

Adventure plays an important role at Swimrun. Because this sport usually takes place in nature, the interaction with the elements should of course not disturb you. The wind, waves and lush vegetation make this sport a truly unique experience.

Swimrun also has to do with problem management. Unforeseen things can happen during a race. Equipment can fail or you can even get lost. At such moments you need a cool head and a certain degree of flexibility. It is these little surprises that many consider the “icing on the cake” of the Swimrun adventure.
